The Stepsons

The following morning the group returns to the Black Fist property and find it empty - they have left town with Arianna and the Prince. Scathe, who is investigating, is surprised to discover a man called Mr. Klien asking after a large black woman (Isabel) and her companions. Scathe does not want to give anything away he as doesn't know Mr. Klien's intentions. He tells Mr. Klien that Isabel and Snake were killed the previous night. Mr. Klien then reveals that his previous clients have left paperwork for the two properties to be turned over to Isabel and her two companions. If Scathe can obtain death certificates for Isabel and Snake filled out by the City Watch then the property will be his.

The group spends the rest of day finding replacements for their fallen members. Arthur Dent, a male human rogue (played by Derek), Hast-ra-kodi, a male human sorcerer (played by Warren D) and Tarod, a male human fighter (played by Sean) are all recruited. They take the new members to The Vulgar Unicorn to meet Kelvin. Here Scathe tells Kelvin about the Black Fist properties and Kelvin agrees to have a Guild forger produce the death certificates provided the properties are then turned over to the Guild by Scathe.

Kelvin also explains that the Guild has uncovered information to suggest that a rival gang called the Stepsons were responsible for Maximillion's assassination. The Guild knows that the Stepsons have a warehouse in the docks where they keep some of their merchandise. Kelvin wants the group to find the warehouse and destroy the goods. He suggests that they talk to a man called Barrick at The Salty Dog tavern in the docks as he is rumoured to know a lot about what is happening in the docks.

At The Salty Dog Tarod starts a fight with some drunk sailors which ends amicably with Tarod befriending the sailors. The group meets with Barrick who tells them that a man called Galton, who runs Premium Property Services, owns many of the warehouses in the docks. Barrick also tells the party that once they know the address he can advise them on the best time to hit the warehouse because he has spent a long time studying City Watch patrols. Arthur and Hast are suspicious that Barrick is helping them for free. Barrick tells them that the Stepsons have had an impact on his business and a blow against them is a very good thing for him.

Galton agrees to give the group the address provided they help him. One of his warehouses has been converted to apartments and he wants it back as a warehouse. He asks the party to evict the tenants. He gives them sacks of rats and tells them to put the rats in through the skylight in the roof, wait an hour and then return to evict everybody on the grounds of vermin infestation. He goes on to tell them that in one of the apartments on the top floor is a woman who recently arrived in town. She is accompanied by a maid and a tall man in armour. During the eviction he wants the man and the maid to have an "accident" and the woman brought to him.

Arthur decides to take matters in his own hands and instead of following Galton's instructions empties a bag of rats in the hallway and tries to evict the first apartment. They are immediately suspicious. The City Watch and Galton are eventually called to defuse the situation and the tenants remain in their apartments. Galton is furious and refuses to have anything more to do with the group.

Arthur goes to see Galton alone and when he has had time to calm down, and does an excellent job of sweet-talking him. Galton agrees to provide the address if they can still bring him the woman. This is easy work for the group and despite the man in armour turning out to be a Paladin they kill him and the maid and kidnap the woman without any problems. Galton gives the group the address of the Stepson's warehouse.

The group returns to The Salty Dog to give this information to Barrick. He tells them the best time to attack and the group decides to follow his suggestions. Unfortunately for the group Barrick is in the employ of the Stepsons and he tips them off. When the group arrives a party of the Stepsons is waiting for them in a nearby shadowy courtyard. The group doesn't scout the area and the first they know of this reception committee is when Snake enters the courtyard. He is out-numbered six to one and is quickly killed. This alerts the rest of the group and a fierce battle ensues. The group defeats the Stepsons but not before they lose Hast-ra-kodi as well.

With the Stepson party dead the group enters the warehouse and completes their assignment.
