Isabel by now realises that she has been poisoned. Martha puts Isabel in touch with a nearby apothecary run by Alten Stulwig who tells them that he needs a sample of the poison if he is to know of an antidote. Instead of giving him some of the Dwarven ale which they have deduced to be the cause of Isabel's poisoning, the group decides to see if they can find some traces of the poison in the sewer. The group claim their map from Melilot when news of Gorolan's death is announced that morning. They also realise that they need a thief in the group and recruit F'Nard Geezer, a male human rogue (played by Billy), to replace Reg and Englebert.
In the sewers they rescue a thief called Parnice who is trapped by a collapsed roof, in return for which he tells them he will help put them in touch with the Thieves Guild. The group also meets a group of three thieves carrying a large sack. Snake, Isabel and F'Nard attack the thieves in the hope of claiming their sack. Tallos refuses to fight in case these men are members of the Guild. He does not want to put their chance of getting into the Guild at risk. One of the thieves escapes with the sack and Snake and Isabel are furious with Tallos. They present him with an ultimatum to leave the group and find his own fate in Sanctuary. Tallos realises that he can have no future with them and leaves the sewers and the group.
The group finds a small tunnel that leads away from the main sewer. This tunnel has a small crack that connects to the local well. Here they find two vials with traces of poison. Upon returning to the main sewer they are confronted by an Orc warband. They are in no position to fight as Snake was badly injured by the fight with the three thieves. The group has no choice but agree to the Orcs' demands to lead them to the Temple of Anen which they seem intent on attacking.
Out of the sewers the Orcs take Snake hostage and allow Isabel and F'Nard to scout ahead. Isabel and F'Nard, who have no qualms about putting Snake's life at risk, manage to find a patrol of City Watch and arrange an ambush with them. When the attack starts the City Watch, who like most people of Sanctuary hate all non-humans, fights with such ferocity that the Orcs are quickly defeated and they flee before they can do anything about their prisoner. Somehow Snake escapes with his life!
It is at this point that the group are joined by Sucellus, a male human cleric (played by Warren D), who is welcomed into the group because they all need healing.
Alten Stulwig is able to identify the poison affecting Isabel as being an unusual type not normally seen in Sanctuary. He knows of a plant called Devil's Tongue from which he could manufacture an antidote. However the only place he knows of this plant growing is in the Palace Gardens. The group are easily able to bribe Honald, the gatekeeper at the Palace, and find out that there is not enough money in the world for him to allow them into the Palace Gardens. He is happy to tell them that the Head Groundsman is called Junkett, and Honald agrees to point him out to the party when he leaves at the end of the day.
Junkett is amiable and chatty, and tells the party that he cannot allow them any of the Devil's Tongue from the Palace Garden because he only has a few specimens. In return for a few drinks he tells the group that he belongs to the Green-Fingered Guild of gardeners in which is a man called Het who is the gardener for several of the Temples. He describes Het as "fanatic" and "unreliable" but nevertheless tells them that Het not only claims to have survived a botanical trip into the Swamp of Night Secrets but that he knows where Devil's Tongue grows in the Swamp. Junkett is clear to say that he does not believe Het but suggests that the group might not have any other options than to find out if Het is telling the truth.
Het is, as Junkett says, a "fanatic". Het is willing to accompany the group provided they agree to help him track down a group of Orcs that he has heard have recently taken residence in the Swamp of Night Secrets. After the previous night's expedition to the sewers they group is more than happy to help hunt down the Orcs.
Het turns out to have had lots of experience tracking Orcs and the group soon find the Orcs in the Swamp. A brief fight ensues, in which the Orc leader flees, but several of his fallen comrades remain, who Het gleefully sacrifices to his god Anen. With this complete he takes the group through the Swamp.
The group meets several wererats. A vicious fight ensues which leaves the wererats dead but Sucellus and F'Nard unconscious. Snake, Isabel and Het cannot carry their bodies through the Swamp so they leave them with the wererat corpses in the hope of retrieving them once they have found the Devil's Tongue. Obviously they relieve F'Nard and Sucellus of their money first!
The group recover the Devil's Tongue, in doing so find a thief lost in the Swamp. The man, Finchy, a male human rogue (played by Sean) decides to come along with them and joins the group.
In the meantime F'Nard and Sucellus are robbed by someone else travelling in the Swamps. Isabel, Snake and Finchy return to find their naked bodies. Fortunately they are still alive and they are carried back to the safety of Martha's Place.
The following morning neither F'Nard nor Sucellus are in a good mood as they have no choice but to spend the day trying to raise money to replace their equipment. In the meantime Snake, Isabel and Fincy are contacted by Parnice, the thief they had rescued from the sewers, who offers to take them to The Vulgar Unicorn in the Maze to meet a Guild contact.
