The wandering walk

I have been on the wandering walk for a few days now. Nothing really exciting happened until I spent the night at the Mouth cairns. I camped with other peregrines. There is an unwritten rule that anyone instigating violence at the cairns will suffer the curse of the slaytongue. I have no idea what that would mean. Perhaps they get struck mute?

Another peregrine called Horrek spoke of a rumour that something was attacking peregrines in the area. We were to discover what as during the night we were woken to a scream which was abruptly cut off. There was some disturbance at the edge of the camp. I went with three other peregrines, Gerd Signy, Damian Smug and Joe to investigate. We found a huge slug like creature with tentacles in the process of consuming a body. Horrek later identified the body as Bish Novalar. I threw a bolt of energy at it and Joe started throwing daggers while Gerd and Damian rushed in to attack. The creature had some ability to regenerate its wounds but we eventually slew it. Joe was very effective with his daggers. We found a number of cyphers embedded in its tentacles which we shared between us.

In the morning I sold a repair cypher to another peregrine, Avnin the mancer, for 4 shins as I had too many to carry safely.

ScuttermorphWhile we were eating breakfast we saw a huge millipede like creature approaching. It had two people. A man and a woman, riding on its back. Horrek identified it as a Scuttermorph from the False woods. It was not stained the blue colour caused by the local dust so must have been a recent arrival to the area. The man identified himself as Patel, travelling with his sister. He said his village in the False woods had been attacked by creatures called Pallones (spinning disk shaped creatures) for days and that the other creatures of the woods were restless and had become dangerous. He was looking for aid for his village but also needed to get his sister to Cylion basin safely. He did not explain why she would be safe there. Horrek offered to take her there while I volunteered with Gerd, Damian and Joe to return with Patel to his village to help. The Scuttermorph ran away after the pair had dismounted, leaving everyone to travel on foot. We ran at a brisk pace all day to get to the False woods before dusk.

The name False woods was apt as there were no trees at all. The area consisted of a field of synth tubes with a mesh cover stretching across the top. They were all about 20ft tall and hovering 2ft off ground. There was a Scuttermorph wrapped round each tube. Patel warned that the Scuttermorphs had been aggressive recently and should not be approached. Damian immediately walked up to a particularly large one and poked it. It immediately attacked him. Joe used one of his cyphers which was some sort of automated projectile. However it glanced off a second Scuttermorph while flying about causing it too to attack.

PalloneI thought things would go badly fighting two Scuttermorphs but Joe used another of his cyphers to encase one in some goo which immediately hardened, trapping the creature. I killed the other with a powerful psychic blast. We then continued to the village which was in the middle of an attack by six Pallones. We moved to attack and they turned on us. I was attacked by two. I killed one but the other injured me. Gerd helped kill the second after he had killed the one attacking him but a seventh Pallone appeared from the foods and attacked me, causing me more injuries. After a short fight we killed them all.

I used my healing abilities to heal by wounds then used a cypther to contact the datasphere to find out the cause of the attacks. I learned there was some energy source at the Embered peeks which was the source of the disturbance.

The next morning I set off with Gerd, Joe and Damian to the Cylion basin. It took two days and we stayed overnight at the Mouth cairns. It was not an uneventful journey.

ChirogWhile camping at the cairns we saw something in the distance. Suddenly the sky was filled with blue-green orbs which we recognised as the fabled light swarms. They appeared to perform a choreographed dance sequence, forming into helix shapes. Suddenly the lights disappeared and we saw things falling to the ground. We went to investigate and found about a dozen large larval creatures which looked about to attack as we approached. Gerd hit one with his torch which caused it to burst into flames. As this happened Joe heard a noise and turned to find a Chirog stalking the group (Gerd knew them as an abhuman reptiles that were originally bred as pit fighters). The larvae scurried away and the group turned to attack the Chirog only to have second charge out of the darkness. Damion killed the first. Gerd struck and wounded the second before Joe killed it. Gerd appeared to go berserk in the fight but calmed down quickly once the creatures were dead.

We continued the next day towards the Cylion basin. After several hours travelling we came across a man lying face down with an arrow sticking out of his side. He groaned as we approached so I went to him and laid my hands on him to perform a miracle. He gasped and sat upright and we realised it was Horrek. He said several people from the camp had followed and attacked them, taking Seria, Patels sister. He heard them say they were headed towards the Tremble pass and he thought they might go to Legrash where the residents prayed on others and traded in slaves. Horrek was thankful we had saved him and said if we were looking for employment a baron Tichronus from the city of Uxphon was looking for reliable people to look after his estate. It was something we decided to consider.

We headed east for a couple of hours towards the Tremble pass. As we passed through a valley we were ambushed by people firing arrows at us from above. Everyone except Gerd was hit. Gerd charged up the side of the hill towards the attackers and the rest of us followed. There were five attackers. During the fight I stood on and got bitten by a snake. We killed four of our attackers though one ran off and had to be chased down and killed by Damian. The fifth surrendered. He said Seria was at their camp. He admitted to being a stalker and thought Seria would be worth many shins at Legrash as she could control scuttermorphs.

Gerd and Horrek went with him to fetch her from their camp while the rest of us searched the bodies. We collected 13 shins. There was also a vial of poison which Damian kept. The snake bite started hurting a lot and I had to perform a miracle to cure it. When Seria was rescued, Gerd ordered the stalker to strip naked then sent him into the desert to his fate.

We caught up with Gerd. While we searched the campsite Joe went off for a piss. We heard a cry and on investigation we came across Joe in the process of killing the now naked stalker who had attacked him from behind. Seria was complaining of hearing voices. I performed a miracle to try to heal her and in doing so heard a voice saying 'You have asked the wrong question again magistrate' before I managed to erect a temporary mental barrier for her.

We continued and finally arrived at Cylion basin. There were traders operating from tents and pools in which people were swimming. One of the traders said the pools contained nano spirits which healed and there were attendants by the pools who could help people. One of the attendants checked Seria and said she needed to speak to Darvin. We found Darvin who said to cure Seria she would need four strips of red metal produced by a plant and a golden pear, both of which could be found in a garden nearby. Unfortunately the garden had been compromised by some creatures. Darvin asked us to go to retrieve the items.

Broken HoundWe headed to the garden. We arrived at dusk and saw six four legged creatures with large beaks (we identified them as broken hounds) who charged at us. Gerd tripped over in the dark and his hammer went flying. Joe threw a dagger and killed one. Gerd then punched and killed one and I killed another with a blast of energy before Joe killed a second. Gerd and Joe then killed the final two.

Gerd picked a pear off one of the plants and received an electric shock. We also gathered the red strips that were hanging from a bush. We then returned to Cylion basin and gave the items to Darvin. She also wanted two cyphers in payment. Gerd and Joe each had one they could offer. I also met Avnin the mancer in the Cylion basin and he said he would be interested to trade for any numenera we might find at the Embered peaks.

We were offered a place to stay the night by people who had heard we helped Seria. During the night we heard piercing screams from the basin. On investigation there were several people who had been attacked by black bugs. The bugs were easily brushed off. One of the attendants started a chant used by the amber priests to ward off nano spirits.

In the morning we set off towards the Embered peaks. Towards evening the wind picked up and we saw a bank of dust with sparkling light approaching. It was the dreaded iron wind, a dangerous cloud of malfunctioning nano spirits. Gerd grabbed me and used a cypher to teleport us clear. Joe and Damian ran from it. I used a cypher to talk with Joe and let them know where we had gone and that we would catch them up. We found them sheltering in a cave were we decided to spend the night. I found a few dead nano spirits left by the storm outside which I collected for later study.

Embered Peaks
Road to the Embered Peaks

The embered peaks was a town which appeared to have been carved from the mountain cliffs. It looked like there had been some form of disturbance, people had been fighting and the residents had formed into groups. Several started fighting as we approached. In the centre of town was a large building. As we headed towards the large building a group started following and then attacked us. They were unarmed peasants but were enraged and attacking in numbers. Gerd was punching them to knock them unconscious and Damian was hitting them with the butt of his sword, but Joe just stabbed his. I fired bolts of energy at them as I did not have any other way of attacking them effectively. Before we had dealt with the first group, a second group attacked and Gerd went berserk. The people appeared to be trying to fight off some effect and I shouted at them to shake it off before they all got killed. It seemed to work as they stopped attacking and wandered off when I told them to leave town.

The building had Devoirs written on the outside indicating the town was run by magistrates. I sensed the disturbance was coming from the building. Joe and Damian broke the door down after Gerd tried and failed. Inside looked like it had been ransacked. As we entered I was attacked by a figure in a purple robe and Joe got electrocuted when he backed into some of the equipment. The robed figure attacked me with a cypher which hurt a lot but I killed him. A small box with another cypher fell from his body which we kept for later examination.

We broke through another door and found another magistrate in purple robes frantically searching through the debris. Gerd threatened him and he said Uran was trying to find the answer and had taken the Devoirs to see the Beale below to get answers. There was another door with a sign saying 1st magistrates office which Gerd broke through. The room beyond had also been ransacked. In the middle of the floor was a circular area with a button to the side. Gerd pushed the button and a section of the floor vanished. Gerd was standing on it and he dropped from sight. We heard a crash from below. Stairs spiralled down round the edge of the hole and the rest of us descended.

We found Gerd picking himself up from the floor. There was a short corridor leading to a metal door with a mirrored plate next to it. Joe put his hand on it and a voice spoke 'enter password'. Damian tried 'Devoirs' and 'let me in' and the voice proclaimed 'one attempt left. Joe started fiddling with it and the voice suddenly said 'access denied' and everything shut down and the circular area closed. Luckily Damian had gone upstairs to talk to the magistrate there and he pressed the button again to reopen the circular area. Joe continued fiddling until the door opened.

About 10 bodies were lying about the room and one magistrate with green trim to his robe still alive whispering into the ear of one of the bodies. When Gerd shook him to get his attention he asked if we were here to help or hinder then asked people to perform some trivial tasks like sweeping the room. He then started muttering about not getting the answer and them lying, and that they have to die for him to ask. He was clearly mad. Gerd went to knock him out and he turned with remarkable speed and stabbed Gerd and Joe. After a few blows Joe killed him. I sensed the power source was below the bodies. When they were cleared away we found a circular door. We also found several cyphers.

BlackMassThe door was ajar and a circular tunnel lead to a triangular room. Most of the room was filled with a black gelatinous mass with red glowing spots which was attached to the wall at a seam. Joe produced a tool he had found in the room above which fitted into the seam and allowed the mass to be detached. As it fell, what looked like a petrified brain rolled from the mass which then started to form back around it. Joe threw a dagger at it before the mass formed into a vaguely humanoid shape and attacked. It was a brutal fight as it attacked both physically and mentally, with both myself and Joe getting badly hurt before we managed to kill it, at which point the brain rolled out of the mass and I sensed the disturbance had gone.

I scanned the brain and determined it was an intelligent nano spirit. We had not destroyed it but it was now calm. Damian found a cypher in the remains of the gelatinous mass which was a poison. There was also a couple of oddities and an artefact in the shape of a staff which could be used to stun opponents.

The inhabitants of Embered peaks recovered and we spent the night there before returning to the Cylon basin. There we sold the skull to Avnin the mancer for 50 shins. We then returned Seria to the False woods before heading towards Uxphon to take up the job Horrek had previously suggested. We found ourselves in Druissi while heading the Tremble pass. They had a problem as recently some form of numenera device had erupted from the ground during an earthquake in an area that had previously been hot springs. The mayor offered us the job of entering the device and clearing it of any dangers in exchange for any numenara we might find inside, to which we agreed. Another peregrine called Ragland offered to join us after we met him in a bar in the evening. He had been showing off, performing acrobatics and even jumped over Gerd. We were also approached by one of the villagers, Gern, who asked us to look for his wife Leta who had gone missing. She was curious about Numenera and he was worried she had gone inside. We promised to help her if we found her inside.

We went to examine the object the following morning. It was made of a composite of materials and was warm due to an energy source within. It seems likely it was the heat source for the hot springs. Some local children pointed us to a rent in the side. Gerd forced it open wide enough for us to enter and there was a corridor leading inwards. The floor was transparent and lights blinked below. The corridor led about 100ft to a large open area. There was a grid on the far side and a large gelatinous circular area near the grid. When Gerd poked it, the gelatinous area lit up and a zzzt noise came from some squares of fabric hanging from the ceiling. Damian started poking it repeatedly, each time causing the zzzt noise.

SteelSpiderGerd tried to push past the fabric and was blown back by an energy discharge. Damian them pushed through and was unharmed. I would surmise that Damians pushing the gelatinous area was turning something on and off, and that if it was pushed again the fabric would discharge energy again. The rest of us followed Damian. Beyond was a very large room with a dim light. We were on a ledge and most of the room was 20ft below us. Joe brushed up against a sharp metallic wire which caused four metallic spiders to drop from above and attack us. We killed them, but Joe caught another of the strands which cut through into the blade of his dagger. Perhaps the fabric was designed to stop these spiders escaping.

The spiders appeared to be numenera devices so I collected some of the parts for future study with Ragland. Ragland and Gerd jumped down into the room below. I tied off some rope to climb down and to give us a way of climbing back up. The room appeared to contain a jungle and was full of tall plants no one recognised. They swayed slightly even though there was no breeze which seemed odd. Clouds of insects buzzed around and there was various small numenera creatures scurrying around though they appeared harmless. The tall plants had a fleshy feel and looked to be covered in skin rather than bark.

Ragland started climbing through the bushes and the rest of us started cutting our way through the jungle following the side of the room. We came to a circular doorway plugged with something that looked like ice but felt like metal and was not cold. It slid sideways easily when Gerd pushed it and beyond was a corridor. The floor was covered with a warm orange liquid. At the far end of the corridor was a tall green obelisk with three doors, one to each sine and one directly at the end of the corridor. As Gerd walked up the corridor a green flash fired from the wall and hit him, knocking him off his feet. We heard a clicking noise from behind us and turned to discover a dial had appeared in the wall. Ragland rotated the dial and the obelisk moved down the corridor to where Gerd was hit. Gerd was then able to use it as a shield to pass by the area producing the green flashes. We followed him past to the doors.

Gerd opened the door to our left. Beyond was a chamber, empty except for an automaton carrying two swords and two shields, which immediately moved to attack us. Joe shut the door in its face but it started immediately started battering at the door. Ragland twisted the dial again and the obelisk moved back to its original position. When Gerd ran back down the corridor he was hit by the green flame again. The automaton kept attacking the door and rents appeared. I went through the door at the end of the corridor with Joe and we shut it behind us before the automation broke through the door.

In the room we found ourselves was eight blue egg like spheres surrounded by cables and other machinery. On hearing the automaton moving down the corridor Joe crept back out into the corridor behind it and slipped into its room. Gerd was fighting it and Ragland was lying prone on the floor. I think he slipped on the orange liquid while running away. Joe shouted about it having a button on its head and Gerd hit the button with his hammer which caused it to drop the shields. Ragland picked himself up and ran to help Gerd, but slipped on the orange liquid and fell to the floor again. Joe and myself attacked it from behind. I assaulted it mentally while Joe threw daggers at it. Gerd was knocked unconscious in the fight and Ragland was also badly hurt. We finally destroyed it after Joe ran out of daggers and threw his axe in desperation. The axe hit something vital I think. I found some cyphers in the wreckage. I also had to perform some miracles to help Gerd and Ragland recover.

SkripWe then opened the door to the right. The room was a mess with equipment broken and overturned. We searched and found several cyphers in the debris. We also found a scrap of skrip with 'vessel, but from where?' and what looked like a map. All three rooms had a second door. We chose to go through the one in the automatons room. We followed the corridor that was beyond for about five minutes. It sloped down at about 15 degrees. Finally we came to a large circular room. In the centre was a tank containing more of the orange liquid. The vessel had many cracks and on top was a huge tentacled creature which appeared to be feeding on creatures in the tank. As we entered the room it moved to attack us.

Travonis UlJoe was grabbed by one of the tentacles and the creature tried to eat him. I also got grabbed but managed to squirm free. Joe had thrown a cypher at it but it but the creature was obviously intelligent as it held him against the cypher until it exploded. We finally killed the creature after Gerd used a cypher which paralysed it for long enough to hack it to bits. It was a brutal fight and I think we were lucky no one was killed.

Joe spent 10 hours repairing the tank while we rested. We searched the rest of this place and found Leta in a room with a large lake. She was badly injured and I performed a miracle on her to bring her round. We surmised that we were in a vessel from a previous age from what we had seen and the scrap of skrip, and we found a room which appeared to be a control room for the vessel. Ragland pressed some buttons which triggered a voice in an unknown language but nothing else happened.

Having explored the inside of the vessel we returned Leta to her husband who was very grateful to us. We spent the night in Druissi before continuing on our journey.
